Although prostitution is legal in Peru, Tumbes city authorities are targeting
the informal sex industry to reduce its high transmission rate of sexually
transmitted diseases.
According to regional police chief, Jose Jesus Julca Alcazar, 4 women were
arrested on the first day of the operation this past Tuesday.
The women were from a clandestine brothel called "La Gallina" (the Hen) located
on Mariscal Castilla Avenue near two elementary schools.
Authorities also reported that they arrested Juan Clemente Guerrero Estrada
(53), the owner and operator of the clandestine brothel.
Police officers had the unpleasant task of collecting evidence from the
informal establishment, which included beds, mattresses, used toilet paper, and
used condoms.
Chief Julca Alcazar stated that the operatives will continue until they gain control of the informal sex business in Peru's northern most city.
